Penhill Conservation Area
The Penhill Conservation Area is under maintenance and faces numerous challenges including invasive alien species such as Port Jackson (Acacia saligna) and irregular fire regimes that are a priority for management.
About
The Penhill Conservation Area is approximately 34 hectares in extent and consists mainly of critically endangered Cape Flats Sand Fynbos as well as Swartland Granite Fynbos. Parts of the conservation area become a seasonal wetland system during winter which provides essential ecological services to the local river systems and serve as a sanctuary to wetland bird and frog species into the area. The conservation area provides the local community with floral diversity during the spring with varieties including Gladiolus carinatus (Blue Afrikaner), Pelagonium triste (Night scented pelargonium), the vulnerable Geissorhiza tenella (Star satin) and an array of small animals including Galerella pulverulenta (Cape grey mongoose), striped Rhabdomys pumilio (field mouse), Bradypodion pumilum (Cape Dwarf Chameleon), among others.
